Foodbanks in Cornwall
13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK and every day people in the UK go hungry. For all it’s beauty, Cornwall is ranked among the poorest regions in Europe with a GDP per person ratio of less than 75 percent of the EU average. Food banks have sprung up in many Cornish towns with more preparing to launch in the coming months.
Food banks are often run by churches and provide help to people in crisis by providing free emergency food for 3 days, or 10 balanced meals, in exchange for a voucher issued by a registered care agency such as Social Services, Health Visitors, Doctors, Probation Offices, Church Pastoral Workers and schools to assist. They rely on the support of local communities as the food is often donated by the community and sorted by volunteers. Each box contains a minimum of three days nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food.
