Golowan Festival Celebrates World Record - 07/02/2012
Pirates On The Prom, the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Pirates, was achieved in Penzance last year at the Golowan Festival. The organisers are celebrating this with a Pirate Party at the Acorn Theatre on Saturday 18th February featuring live music, food, pirate games, pirate fancy dress and DJ’s. Performing are Slap Dash Trio, Blue Horyzon, Tyn Daga, Shanty Baba, DJ Kevin Godden and many more.
Angie Butler will be handing over The Guinness certificate to the Mayor of Penzance and the town which testifies that on June 26th 2011 a staggering 8,734 pirates gathered on Penzance Promenade. Evidence was submitted and The Guinness Book of Records confirmed that this was the largest pirate gathering ever attempted and therefore a world record. The previous record was held by Hastings with a gathering of 6,166 pirates in 2010.
It is hoped that as many pirates as possible who were involved in the successful world record bid will celebrate at the party and dress in their record-making garb. There will also be a pirate quiz, dancers from the Big Dance Company and a film of the Golowan weekend. Celebrations begin at 6.00pm, with activities for pirates in training, and complimentary cake and a schooner of ale for the first 40 seasoned seafarers through the door, donated by Penzance’s new Micro Brewery, Cornish Crown.
All thanks for this tremendous effort goes to the organisers of the Golowan Festival, Angie Butler and her helpers and the many volunteers who contributed over the festival weekend.
Tickets can be brought from The Crown Inn, Victoria Square, Penzance and Mounts Bay Music, Causeway Head. Tickets are £5.00, with family tickets costing £8.00 before 8.00pm.
21st Birthday of Golowan Festival - 31/05/2011
The 21st Golowan Festival will run from 18th June to 26th June 2011. Miracle Theatre kicks off proceedings with a performance of 'The Death of Sherlock Holmes' in Penlee Park at 19.30 on the 18th.
The main event, Mazey Day will be held on Saturday 25th when the whole of the town centre will be bedecked with bunting, flags and greenery for the school parades and serpent dancers led by the Golowan band.
Festivities move to Penzance Harbour on Sunday 26th for Quay Fair Day. 1pm is the time for all to be dressed as a pirate on Penzance Promenade to help smash the Guinness World Record for the largest number of pirates in one place. Hastings currently holds the record with 6,166 pirates, but as the true home of all pirates Penzance can do better!
